Focus on Preventive Care This Year [BLOG]

How important is your smile? Well, it’s one of the first things that people notice about you. A healthy, cared-for smile reflects a healthy, cared-for body. If your pearly whites are decayed or damaged, it diminishes your self-confidence and may even have consequences in your social and professional lives.

And it’s not just about outward appearances. Research continues to demonstrate how the state of the teeth and gums influences overall well-being. Infections in your mouth may spread throughout the body. Periodontal disease increases your risk of developing heart problems, diabetes, and possibly some types of cancer.

For 2018, add one more resolution to your list: this year, focus on preventive dentistry. Hone your oral hygiene routine at home and get into the habit of visiting Thomas J. Feder DDS PC every six months. This is a resolution that will save you the pain of dental problems and time and money that you won’t have to spend on invasive restorative procedures. Call 618-219-1412 to book a checkup at our Belleville, IL dental office.

We Offer Comfortable, Affordable Care

At Thomas J. Feder, we understand that coming to see use twice every year is not always as simple as it may sound. Perhaps you don’t have dental insurance and are concerned about cost. Or maybe you suffer from dental anxiety and are nervous about drilling or pain. We do our best to put your concerns to rest.

Healthy Smiles Plan

If you are concerned about the cost of twice-yearly dental visits, consider enrolling in our in-office Healthy Smiles Plan. For $250, you get the peace of mind of knowing your basic preventative care is covered. The plan includes two regular dental checkups — including cleaning, exam, and X-rays — plus 20% off all other dental procedures. This small investment will pay off enormously in the long run by keeping your natural teeth in great shape and preventing the need for invasive and expensive restorative procedures down the road.

Goodbye, Dental Anxiety

Do you put off scheduling dental checkups because of your nerves? When you do have an appointment in the books, do you have trouble sleeping the night before and feel like bolting as you sit in the waiting room? Dental anxiety is extremely common and self-perpetuating. The longer you put off appointments, the more problems you’ll have with your teeth and gums, and the more invasive dental work you’ll need.

At Thomas J. Feder, DDS, we strive to not only take good care of your mouth. We strive to put you at ease and calm your nerves through all of your dental procedures.

We have blankets and pillows available to ensure you’re cozy in the dentist’s chair. As we work on your mouth, you can watch a favorite show or movie on one of our ceiling-mounted TVs with headphones. Digital X-rays are more comfortable than conventional, provide better pictures, and expose you to a fraction of the radiation.

If, like many people, you fear the anesthesia needle more than the procedure itself, you’ll love our Vibraject injection system. This cutting-edge technology uses vibration to eliminate the pain of anesthesia delivery. You probably won’t even know you’ve had a shot!

What to Expect at Your Dental Checkup

Twice-yearly dental visits are important even if you take excellent care of your teeth and gums at home.

  • We will give your teeth a thorough professional cleaning. We have the tools and expertise to remove plaque and tartar that your toothbrush can’t reach. We will also floss and polish your teeth to restore their luster.
  • Dr. Feder or Dr. Smith will examine your teeth, gums, and entire mouth. They will be able to spot early signs of gum disease, tooth decay, and other problems. Early detection generally means easier, less invasive treatment.
  • We may take digital X-rays. These enable us to see problems hidden from view such as abscesses, impacted teeth, and cavities between the teeth.

Be a Dental Superstar at Home

Taking good care of your mouth at home isn’t difficult, but it’s important to practice good technique and be consistent.

  • Brush twice per day for two minutes at a time.
  • Floss daily.
  • Be sure to use fluoride toothpaste and a soft-bristled toothbrush.
  • Be thorough, covering all surface of the teeth, but gentle as well. Scrubbing the teeth may remove enamel, damage the gums, and make you susceptible to gum recession and tooth decay.
  • Replace your toothbrush every couple months or whenever the bristles become frayed
